General information. Not legal advice, and not a substitute for official alerts.

Short answer (checked Oct 25, 2026): Barranquilla isn't on any US, Canadian or UK high-risk list: the US rates Colombia Level 3 and Atlántico isn't on its Level 4 list, and Canada and the UK don't list Barranquilla or Atlántico either. The UK still names the Caribbean coast among places where pickpocketing, mugging and armed robbery are a problem. Sources: travel.state.gov; travel.gc.ca; GOV.UK.

Is Barranquilla safe to visit right now?

Next check: Nov 25, 2026, or sooner if the US Embassy posts a Barranquilla or Atlántico alert.

As of Oct 25, 2026, the US Embassy's recent alerts don't mention Barranquilla or Atlántico. The alerts from Sept 3 to Oct 19, 2026 cover Cesar, Norte de Santander, Santa Marta and Route 90 near Santa Marta, a tsunami warning, and protests in Bogotá. (US Embassy in Colombia, alerts, read Oct 25, 2026) No alert doesn't mean no risk.

Two dated items for the coast:

  • Hurricane season runs until the end of November. Canada says even small tropical storms in the Caribbean can turn into major hurricanes in this period.3
  • September to November is a rainy season. Canada says flooding and mudslides can occur, mostly in rural areas, and can close roads.3

If you're driving east toward Santa Marta, read Is Santa Marta safe? first. The US Embassy posted a Route 90 disruption alert near Santa Marta on Sept 21, 2026.

Is Barranquilla safe for Americans and tourists? What the advisories say

Barranquilla and Atlántico are not on any of the three governments' highest-risk lists. The US still rates all of Colombia Level 3, "Reconsider travel", and the UK names the Caribbean coast for street crime. Details and dates are in the table below.

The US Level 3 applies to all of Colombia, Barranquilla included. The US says street crime "occurs throughout Colombia and can quickly become violent", and that if criminals target you, you shouldn't resist.2

Is Barranquilla safe at night?

None of the three advisories gives Barranquilla-specific night advice. The country-wide guidance covers it: don't hail taxis on the street, book through an app, your hotel or a dispatch line, and watch your drink. Canada and the UK both report criminals using scopolamine and other drugs to rob foreigners, often met through dating apps, in bars and nightclubs.34 The full detail is on Colombia travel advisory.

Is Barranquilla safer than Medellín or Cartagena?

No government advisory ranks the three cities, and we haven't compared official crime statistics. On paper they're in the same position. Atlántico, Antioquia and Bolívar, the departments the three cities are in, are all off the US Level 4 list.2 The UK names Medellín and the Caribbean coast, which covers Barranquilla and Cartagena, among the places with street-crime problems.4 For Medellín, see Medellín safety. For Cartagena, see Living in Cartagena.

Is Barranquilla safe to live in?

The advisories are written for visitors, and none of them covers Barranquilla neighborhoods. We haven't verified official crime data by barrio from the Policía Nacional or the Alcaldía de Barranquilla, so we won't publish a list of safe or unsafe neighborhoods until we can source it.

Is Barranquilla Carnival safe?

None of the US, Canadian or UK pages mentions the carnival. Canada says demonstrations and strikes happen regularly in large cities and advises avoiding areas with demonstrations and large gatherings. The US lists tourist areas, clubs and restaurants among possible terrorist targets across Colombia.32 We haven't confirmed the official 2027 carnival dates yet.
